Rapunzel Comic 1

Description

The first comic strip for my gothic retelling of the tale of Rapunzel by the Brother's Grimm. It will be published weekly in the student newspaper at SCAD-Atlanta.

I only had a few days notice to come up with the concept and create the comic, so this is a bit rough. Though the roughness lends itself to a woodcut style I'm not altogether unpleased with.

BTW, though it was WAY after you needed it- we got a bunch of Rapunzel stock up over at *HiddenYume-stock It's a bit buried- we had a pretty massive shoot- but feel free to take a look!

You're at SCAD? Cool! A really good friend of mine just started there, and she says it's one of the best art schools around.

And I'd love to see more of this comic.

Well, for your first comic-strip attempt it's pretty darn fucking good.

However, to get to ';pretty dark fucking GREaT', you'll have to

a) look up how comic artists make use of speech bubbles, so that they are bold but not intrusive

b) experiment with panel arrangement for especially when the story reaches climactic points, to create a real feeling of motion or emotion

c) Do more Rapunzel! I love it and I want more and i want it now goddamnit! :D

haha!

Indeed, I'm currently looking around right now to get some more fitting fonts while not being too flowery (as those are hard to read)

Do you think the speech bubbles need less of a border around them then? Perhaps more of a drop shadow effect might work? I'm open for specific suggestions on anything as I'm totally new to this.

There will definitely be some more panel play as I get accustomed to this newspaper strip format. I really HATE bleak panel arrangements like this one so I really want to mess around with it more. Also, this is a weekly newspaper so there will be a little strip each week as long as I keep up with things:D

ooo...u're doing it for a newspaper? so how much do they pay u per strip?

borders are optional, i guess. in some cases u might find that not having one actually suits the space/scene more. though, u could try doing more roughly-drawn or textured bubble-borders to fit with the organic wood-cut style. keep the feel, like.

i'm no comic graphics expert myself. in fact i always wondered how they fit the bubble into the scene, with all that backdrop! hehe

Unfortunately, it's a non paying job so not much return except for publicity and resume building. Still, it has the extra perk of getting me motivated to actually do something besides whittle away my hours staring at the computer. I'm still staring at the computer, regardless, but at least I'm drawing something at the same time.

Hmm that's a good idea about rough hewing the bubbles. I'll have to experiment and see what comes out.

Thanks! It was one of those wild rushed spontaneous experiments that ended up looking better as it went along. I'm all inspired to try this method out on other stories now:)
